The coders use different computer languages such as Perl or Java to create elegant solutions to artistic problems. Instead of chiseling away at marble or using a paintbrush, they use lines of code to create their art. You can’t really distinguish this kind of creativity from art that is mad with a pen or paint because all the artist need to have an understanding of the medium that the are using. If you are using a brush you need to know what kind of mark it’ll make on the paper, when chiseling marble you need to know how the marble will brake and when coding you need to know what the different dedicated words will do and you need to understand the format of which you need to write your code. I don’t believe that the role of the artists or even art its self has change, it might be on a different media but the concept of art hasn’t changed.
2-What function distinguishes the artistic use of code from a merely technical use? Give some examples of this function in a few art works from the chapter.
Mandelbrot work using the method called iteration with a computer sets him as an artist because of the fact that he was not concerned with find real-world applications for he’s work but, rather he was only interested in a mathematical and visual construct.
Musgrave work with fractals. This is art because it uses the repetition and randomness of fractals to create images of artificial landscapes, creating mountains, shadows, clouds, tress and water.
3-Give examples of three mususes of browser technology to create art. What was the nature of the misuse/creative use and what was the effect? What issues were raised?
Playful misuse, transparency and artistic misuse. By misusing code and playing around with the syntax you get a better understanding about why certain things don’t work, playing makes coding a lot easier to learn. One way to encourage transparency is to have open-source code. Artistic misuses are when you are purposely misusing the code to create a work of art.
4-Give an example for each of the following: code as syntax, code as tool, and code as experience.
Artist Amy Alexander uses an algorithm that takes two C structures and makes a new that is surprising and more efficient. This is an example of code as syntax.
Examples of code as a tool are packages like Adobe Illustrator and video editors like Apple’s Final Cut. They are tools that can manipulate images and sounds. An example of code as experience was in 1965, when three mathematicians Nake, Noll and Nees installed photographic enlargements of plotter drawings. Code as experience is making an artwork that can be interactive to the viewers.
